Decentralized Electrification for Multifamily Buildings

Course Description

As building owners and design teams pursue lower-carbon, more energy-efficient buildings, HVAC system selection has become a critical design decision. Architects must balance occupant comfort, energy performance, mechanical space requirements, operating costs, and evolving code requirements while supporting building electrification goals. Modern heat pump technologies are increasingly being evaluated as part of this transition because they offer an opportunity to reduce fossil fuel use while maintaining year-round heating and cooling performance in a wide range of building types.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify the primary configurations of all-in-one heat pumps and the building types each is best suited for.
  2. Explain how variable-speed compressor heat pumps deliver heating and cooling without a central plant.
  3. Evaluate cold-climate heating performance using COP, heating capacity, and supplemental electric heat behavior.
  4. Apply selection criteria - capacity, footprint, ventilation, and acoustic targets - to multifamily projects.
